Whether it’s taking a tour in town or simply swimming around in front of the hotel, there’s a whole world of wildlife to see in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System.
The second largest reef in the world stretches all the way from the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula down through Honduras. We’re lucky to have such a beautiful ecosystem right in our backyard!
One great way to snorkel in the reef is by taking a tour in town with one of the many snorkeling companies. Most tours provide snorkeling equipment and life vests. The tours typically consist of two forty-minute swims out in the reef with a guide. Some of the highlights of the tours are rays, barracudas, lobsters, sea turtles, and endless schools of colorful fish.
While it doesn’t have the same quantity of fish as the tours, there’s also plenty to see in front of the hotel. Snorkeling equipment rentals are included in your hotel stay, so stop by the reception office to pick up your gear before heading out there!
The beach directly in front of the hotel can be a little rocky so we recommend entering about 100 meters to the left of the hotel. No guarantees, but we’ve had guests see sea turtles, rays, large starfish, and pufferfish.
Come check it out for yourself!
